The ART of Upcycling by OCEAN SOLE

Picture this: a beach in Kenya, white sand and blue waves. The sun is shining down on what the waves leave behind. Seaweed, shells but also something completely different. Something that does not belong there, a flip flop. In fact, the whole beach is littered with flip flops!

A large proportion of the world’s population walk through life on flip flops. This footwear is cheap in purchase but not durable in use. This, combined with an underdeveloped waste processing system, makes that the flip flops in the developing world end up in nature and ultimately in the oceans. As we are passionate about the oceans and aware of the importance of ecosystems, we from Kenyan Ocean Sole tackle this issue.

The washed-up flip-flops are being collected, cleaned and glued. The creative team of craftsmen then processes the flip flops into the colourful animals. Three local but also global issues are being tackled: it prevents and remedies pollution of land and sea by plastics, it creates employment and it reduces logging for wood artworks. The inspiring artworks by Ocean Sole tell a special story, ‘The Art of Upcycling’. The brothers Nicholas and Michael (Nic&Mic) have been the European partner for colourful flip flop art since 2014.
